On the Radio –

// June 30th, 2009 // No Comments » // Cape Town, Interviews, book launch, travelling

It seems that today is Radio Day.

I’m on my way to an interview on Good Hope FM (in Cape Town) at 10.20am this morning, to chat about our Round-the-World trip – a great place to listen in if you’re confused about all the random world travel snippets I keep throwing at you! Check out http://www.goodhopefm.co.za/ to listen live…

And if you miss that, you can always listen to my pre-recorded interview on WUWM Lake Effect in Milwaukee, where I chat about all things Strange Nervous Laughter… Here’s the link for that:

Enjoy!

My (fun) disaster:

// June 18th, 2009 // No Comments » // Life (and the living of it), Strange Nervous Laughter, book launch, travelling

The plan seemed simple enough:
While in New York City, organise a relaxed, informal reading somewhere pretty (i.e. in Central Park) and bake cupcakes to give to people so they have a little something to snack on while I read. Then invite all my friends and contacts in New York (check out the lovely invitation here), and get them to invite all their friends and contacts.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, global warming. In a word (or two).
You see, NYC is not usually wet or rainy in June – it’s summer, it should be deliciously sunny. But the weather has been a little crazy of late, and the craziness did not work in my favour… The forecasts said scattered thundershowers would hit at 6pm. They hit at 2.30pm. My reading was at 3pm.

We’d already baked delicious cupcakes, by this stage (chocolate with vanilla icing and mini M&Ms… yummy!)

cupcakes

And we’d figured out how to transport them across town on the subway (by buying a couple of doughnut boxes from the doughnut store across the road)…

subway

When we exited the subway, it was breezy and warm, and we thought we’d missed the morning rain and were going to miss the evening storms. But when we arrived at Central Park…

central-park

The heavens opened. It poured. Bucketed. Deluged us with rain. So that anyone in their right mind, looking out the window in the hour before the reading and deciding whether to come to an outdoor event in the park, would have decided against it (I was already there, so I couldn’t change my mind!)

rain

Still, I had a couple of extremely loyal friends who decided to brave the weather, most notably my Number One Fan, Jess (in her handmade t-shirt)…

Once we realised that the rain was not going to let up any time soon, we traipsed off through the park handing out free cupcakes. It was so much fun! I started off on the baseball field, and people came flocking towards me when they heard the magical word ‘cupcake’ (combined with the equally magical word ‘free’)… and then we walked through the park and I approached people and asked if they wanted a cupcake. They were either totally delighted, or looked a little scared. It was very amusing!

parade

We ended up in a Starbucks (because it was warm, cosy, and quintessentially American)…

Where I gave a short reading, after all…

reading

It was, to all intents and purposes, a complete disaster. But it was a really fun disaster! As I led my merry band of wet friends through the park, handing out cupcakes, I was loving it! It was great fun.

Now, this could have been because I’d had an amazing hour-long interview on Cosmo Radio the day before, and I felt as if I’d already done my bit for book marketing; or because it was the end of a really wonderful three week friend tour all over the East Coast of the USA; or even because I have recently realised that I don’t like organising publicity stuff for myself any more (give me online stuff to do and I’m happy, organise something for me to do and I’m even happier, but don’t put me in charge please!)

It might even be that I am slowly, ever so slowly, learning to let go and see where life takes me. That I am finally learning to be a bit more easy-going and not trying to control everything. Whatever the reason, I had myself an extremely fun disaster of A Reading in Central Park.

Just a tad jetlagged…

… After more than 40 hours of travelling, which is my excuse for not having blogged yet!

But tomorrow (I promise!) I will write about my fun disaster of a reading, and soon soon I will give you a photographic tour of my amazing trip.

It was amazing!

But being home is really lovely too…

How have the last three weeks been for you?

International First Love Day – this Friday!

// May 11th, 2009 // 8 Comments » // Blogs, Love, Strange Nervous Laughter, book launch

Are you a blogger? Have you ever been in love? Do you want to take part in International First Love Day this Friday, the 15th of May?

You might not know it, but this Friday is International First Love Day.
As part of the celebrations surrounding Strange Nervous Laughter being released in the USA (tomorrow!) I thought it was time we had a First Love Day. Strange Nervous Laughter is a book about love, you see. About what love does to us, and how we are changed by being in love, out of love, or on the brink between the two. So I thought it was time we talked about love a little.

This Friday is the first official International First Love Day. It’s a chance for all of us, together, to tell about our first loves, in words or pictures or images or photos. It’s a day to commemorate first loves.
And there’s a logo to go with it! (Isn’t it pretty?)

If you’re interested in taking part in International First Love Day, please RSVP (either in the comments or by email)  with your name and blog address, so that I can compile a list of the blogs who are involved, and post it for all to see (on my blog / Facebook / Twitter etc). If you have any friends you think might like to get involved – forward this to them! International First Love Day is a day for everyone.

And make sure you check back on Friday to see the list of International First Love Day participants!

love-day

Effort vs. intention…

// April 29th, 2009 // 3 Comments » // Decisions, Life (and the living of it), Time, book launch

I’ll have to be brief this morning, because I’ve got a day of nonstop Things To Do, many of them rather lovely (if you’re in South Africa, tune into SAfm at 1.30pm for an interview I’m taking part in on blogging… should be fun!)

I just wanted to throw an idea at you, and see what you think. It’s about effort vs. intention. Esther Hicks, who I’m rather a fan of (could you guess?) says that why things come to us has less to do with how hard we try, and more to do with how much in alignment our energy is. So, for example, if you really want a new job you obviously have to pitch up to the interview and do your best, but when you go home it would be more valuable to spend some time getting your energy to a good place – feeling happy and inspired and lucky and ready to receive a new job – than it would be calling the secretary every five minutes and hanging up before you say anything!

It’s an interesting idea, I think, because it could have the most extraordinary effects if it turns out to be true… I’m going to experiment with it and let you know how it goes, care to join me?
My experiment involves a long story about how I started applying for my Irish passport renewal in February, but due to me being a dummy and smiling too much in the photos and then having to take and post new photos, and then having them get lost in the mail, I’m now scarily in danger of not getting my passport before I leave for the USA. It takes 4 weeks, I leave in 3 and a half.

Now, apparently sometimes it takes 3 weeks, so there’s hope. And I plan on calling the Irish passport people (in Ireland) today to state my case – my book’s coming out! I need to get there on time! I will make every effort to do as much as I can to get my passport in time. And then I will let go and wait for it to come to me. Because stressing about it and trying to make up things to do to make it arrive won’t work. At all.

I don’t think.

What do you think?

1173624_old_time

UPDATE: 24 hours later, and I’ve spoken to the charming Irish Embassy people in Dublin (I was stating my sob story for her and she interrupted to ask me what my novel is called and how to spell my name!) All I had to do was supply the South African office with a telephone number, and the passport could be processed. The Irish folks seem to think there’ll be no problem getting it in 3 weeks. *Phew!*

I’m in love!

I just got the first hardcover copy of ‘Strange Nervous Laughter’, the US edition.

It is, hands down, the most beautiful book I’ve ever seen. Crisp, clean, quirky and all mine!
I love it.

Want to see?

Here’s the cover…. isn’t it lovely? I never knew hardcover looked so much better, but it does!

Open the book, and you get the…. inside cover! (with a delightful description that you probably can’t read!)

frontcover

Then there’s the first page. *sigh!*

The last page, with my gratitude list…

The back cover, with the only author picture of myself I’ve ever loved (courtesy of my man!)

And the back of the book, with a whole lot of excessively wonderful things that other writers have said about Strange Nervous Laughter…

Oh, and there’s the spine! I even love the spine.

Be honest with me, have you ever seen a book this beautiful in your life?

I didn’t think so! ;)

Can you believe it?

I finally have an author pic that I love!

I liked the ones I used for the SA edition of Strange Nervous Laughter, but at the last minute the publishers didn’t use the one I’d chosen and used another one instead, so I didn’t love it. More than that, though, I didn’t think it really looked like me. It looked like an idea of me, but not like me.

Which has been my complaint with photo shoots all along – they pick out a facet of you, but not the real you.

At last, though, I have a photo that looks like me and that I like. Perhaps this is because my man took it, and he is not only a very talented photographer, but also knows me inside out! Here it is, what do you think? It’s going to be on the inside flap of my American books!! Hooray.
