Day 20: Yet another succulent

// July 21st, 2010 // 5 Comments » // Nature, Philosophy

desk plant

I know, I know, another succulent… But this one was actually requested by a colleague because her desk looked lonely.

And then my mug cracked, and instead of being sad about (yet another) mug breaking before my very eyes, I decided it was happy timing and filled it with some dirt and a plant. Because sometimes when things you love break, you just have to accept that they’re broken and make the best out of a bad situation.

Yip, I’m trying to insert a little philosophy into today’s succulent post, did you notice?

Day 14: Desk plant

You know how some people are crazy cat ladies? I’m a crazy succulent lady.

Seriously, how can anyone not love a plant that grows no matter what, can spread simply by breaking off a piece of it, and comes in so many different varieties? Totally cool. No desk, home or verandah should be without them.

So I brought in a succulent in a tiny mug for a lovely colleague of mine whose desk is sad and bare (I said it was because she’s helping me out with my budget, but really it’s because she’s such a pleasure to work with).

Day 1: Get Well succulent

// July 1st, 2010 // No Comments » // Decisions, Inspiration, Nature, Time

day 1

I specially painted a mug to look like the sky (with little puffy clouds!) and put a succulent in it to give to a dear friend. She looked after my succulent garden while we were travelling, and was more than a little sad to say goodbye to it…

She was supposed to come over after work, but was in bed sick, so I scurried over to her house and slipped the succulent under her front gate.

Day 1 of 29. So far, so good!

It’s Earth Day today.

What are you doing about it?

How about heading over to FLOW (For Love of Water) and making the FLOW Promise:

WebPromise

It couldn’t be easier – just click through to http://forloveofwater.co.za/promise/ and write your name, make the promise and tell others how you’re acting for your love of water (there are no wrong answers, I promise).

Our bodies are over 70% water. Maybe it’s time we started thinking about that…

What do you think?

At last! Photos from the adventure.

I know I was pretty bad at posting any pics while we were travelling around South-East Asia and South America (blame it on too much to blog, tweet and vlog about), but I finally have some images to show you!

Oh happy day.

My man has posted photo sets from all the hotels we were lucky enough to review (in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, with more to follow). You won’t find many candid shots (those will take a leetle bit longer to process), but consider this a taste of what’s to come.
They are absolutely stunning.

And I’m not just saying that because I’m in love with him.
These are some seriously beautiful pics.
Check them out at www.markpeddle.com (really, go now, they’re so beautiful).

But be warned! You might not want to be my friend any more when you see all the incredible places we stayed at…

Wondering where I’ve been?

// August 17th, 2009 // No Comments » // Life (and the living of it), Nature

I’m over there at the Sweet Life blog!
Come find out about my last week and a half – extremely exciting!

I’ve got such a good story for you, too – I’ll tell you tomorrow, when I have some time to write it all down…

How have you been?

On websites, brothers, and succulents.

// April 16th, 2009 // 3 Comments » // Blogs, Durban, Nature

Can we just spend a moment dwelling on how pretty my new website is, please?

I’m in the midst of an extremely busy day – figuring out how much our round-the-world trip is going to cost, working, beavering away at a secret project I’ll tell you about tomorrow – but I keep coming back to this lovely site and just looking at it. Isn’t it delightful?

And it’s going to get ever-so-slightly more delightful in the next few days, when my man makes me a logo to go up there in the left-hand corner. It’s extremely handy being surrounded by such talented people!

The website design is courtesy of my very smart (and very patient!) brother Niall. Check out what else he does at www.niallmcnulty.com – he knows a whole lot about many things of which I am clueless, not only websites, but cultural tourism, archives, all kinds of media, and facilitating workshops.

And, of course, succulents!
One of his hobbies is gardening, and he recently started this winner blog all about plants, gardens and nature in Durban. It’s called Sprig, and it’s a treat.

Go and read it while I carry on with my work!

Credit card conundrum…

// January 15th, 2009 // 5 Comments » // Blogs, Decisions, Guinness World Records, Nature

So on a completely different note, I need some advice about the dreaded credit card.

I’ve never even been vaguely tempted to get a credit card because I like only spending money that I have, and debit cards work just fine for that thank you very much.

But the fact remains that credit cards are very handy, especially when trying to do transactions online or when travelling, and maybe the time has come to Take The Plunge and get one. I’m very good with money, so I’m not worried about that, there’s no chance I’ll go diving into debt. I just don’t know anything about them. Help!

So! Any advice? Which is a good one to go for? Stick with a bank or go for something like a Clicks credit card? Any horror or success stories to steer me in the right direction? Help!

Port Elizabeth, here I come!

// September 4th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Cape Town, Life (and the living of it), Nature

Yip, I’m off again. This time with the man, and by car. We’re driving to Port Elizabeth tomorrow (about a 6 or 7 hour drive from Cape Town), spending the night, then exploring Jeffrey’s Bay and St Francis Bay on Saturday (within an hour of Port Elizabeth, I think) and driving home on Sunday.

Phew!
A lot of driving.

I think it will be fun, though. We’ve got lots of padkos (snacks for the car), I just got a book on CD from the library, we’re burning mixes tonight and we’ve booked into two lovely-looking B&Bs – one in a charming guest house, one right on the beach. Oh, and all our expenses are being paid for, because it’s a work trip. Delightful!

I’ll report back on Monday, with photos and such… Until then, have an *awesome* weekend!

Lessons from plants:

// March 14th, 2008 // No Comments » // Life (and the living of it), Nature

I’ve become something of an avid (albeit lazy) gardener.

My style of  gardening looks a little like this: I plant something, and water it regularly (watering is my favourite part of gardening) and then I watch. None of that weeding, de-bugging nonsense. Nature has to have a space to play. But I watch, and wait, and sure enough I’m presented with a miracle in some form… Oh, some of my plants are small and uninspired, but every so often I’ll resurrect something from near-death, or discover some little flowering treasure that I didn’t plant, or see seeds grow from nothingness into life.

And I think there’s a lesson for us here. Even when something looks like it’s dead (brown leaves, drooping, no vitality) it can come back to life. It just needs some care, regular watering and lots of sunshine. Sometimes in life parts of us feel dead (our creativity / spontaneity / ability to love) but all they need are some attention, some focussed care.

Also, have you noticed how slowly things grow in nature? You can tell they’re growing because in the space of a week there’s a visible difference, but to look at it every morning is to think it’s paused in its tracks. Similarly, sometimes we feel like we’re not getting anywhere, no matter how much attention we’ve poured into a certain segment of our lives. But maybe the growth is just incremental, and needs some time to flourish and become visible.

So take some time, this weekend, to do a little soul gardening. Some time out, some watering, soaking up a bit of sunshine. Tend yourself. You might be surprised at the miraculous results.
